Tanja Waterfront

Tanja Waterfront welcomes travelers to Tangier before they ever step into the city. Many arrive by ship, crossing into Morocco through this large public space, and the design needed to do two things at once: orient a diverse, international crowd and signal, immediately, where they had landed. RSM Design developed the vision for the entire waterfront and worked alongside architects, landscape architects, and lighting designers to build a wayfinding system equal to that arrival. The result reads as contemporary. It is built on something older.
The team studied the intricate patterning found in Tangier's traditional architecture and translated it into a motif carried throughout the signage. Visitors moving through the waterfront encounter that pattern repeatedly, on markers, on monuments, in the rhythm of the space itself, so that finding a direction also means noticing a place. Wayfinding becomes a quiet introduction to the city's history, embedded in the texture of the design rather than explained beside it. For a gateway built to greet thousands of strangers, that recognition matters. It tells them where they are before they ask.
